LO1: Analysis of different scripts (P1)

A document that out lines every audio, visual, behavioural, element required to tell a story. However scripts can also be used as a set of instructions.

Language and Angle of the article

Mode of address-
  • Teacher to Pupil (Formal Language)
  • Peer to Peer (Casual Language)
  • Parent to Child (Formal/ Casual)
Restricted code -
Language is simple, used for effect

Elaborate code-
language is more complex, used for detailed information. This is seen in the BBC news script.

BBC News Radio

This mode of address is teacher to pupil, because it uses elaborate code due to it being a formal news show so it can include more complex language to further educate viewers on a story. The language used is appropriate for its older target audience of  20-50+, male 50:50 female divide. The purpose of the news genre is to inform and educate the nation with live news and global stories.

Film - Harry Potter

The opening to this film script is 'Teacher to Pupil' mode of address because it is clear in the script the adults have authority and speak down to the character 'Harry'. It uses restricted code because it is a film for the younger target audience age of 13-30 , male50:50 female. This audience will not understand complex language such as a more formal news show for example. The Purpose  is to entertain because it is a fictional story  about a young wizard escaping his home to go to the 'school of magic'.

TV Drama - Luther

This TV drama script uses a Peer to peer mode of address this is because in this scene it is a nagotiation. This is due to levelling with a peer you will be able to get more information out of them since it is a more comfortable setting. The use of restricted code is used here even though the show is of an older fan base of 16-30+, male 60:40 female. It is used in this circumstance since it is a tense scene within the show. Short sentences are used for dramatic effect. Luther as a series purpose is to entertain, the short sentences of the script righting is used for powerful effect so the scene is shown to be intense. Genre of the show is an Action crime/ thriller.

FORMAT AND LAYOUT

All scripts are written in size 12 and the font never variates from Courier. Screen plays have character descriptions for the actors, so they can get into the roll. Character descriptions allow for in-depth personality trates the actor can portray within the TV/ Radio/ Film producution, this allows for more direction. The job roles who use the script are: Director(s), Actors, Video editor ( this can be for sub titles) . A computer game script includes a flow chart as well because it helps the designer understand what happens within the game and what decisions need to be made:

Presenter/character sections will be played out at the characters name in Capitals, cerntered, with the prompted script lines below. example:

Video games will have a synopsis so the game designers get a brief idea of the story behind the game. A stage direction is an instruction written into the script of a play, indicating stage actions, movements of performers.

Sound effects are presented in scripts by appearing on the left hand side as a sub heading, [SOUND] or appear as all caps and underlined to show a clear contrast to the rest of the script.
Linear structure is most common in the scripts I have looked at seeming as it is the most simple. Showing a start middle and end in chronological order.
